Sand Play Therapy

 

Sandplay Therapy provides:

• a means of self-discovery, healing and integration
• a transformation or redirection of blocked energy
• access to the childhood world of imagination and play, re-awakening the clients' creative nature
• a means by which children and adults, unable to articulate their feelings and experiences, can find expression and integration
• safe entry into the deeper archetypal, mythic and transpersonal realms of the psyche

• an opportunity for a creative non-rational experience, as a balance to society's overemphasis on the ego's intellect


Sandplay seems to access areas of human suffering which have otherwise always resisted psychotherapeutic treatment. Recent research in neuroscience explains why this is possible: trauma is not remembered in verbal form which has never been articulated in words nor ever shaped cannot be outwardly expressed. In sandplay, however, it manifests itself as a form, shaped by the hands. The inexpressible can be seen and touched therefore, it can be transformed.

A member of BACP, Alan Penny is also a former accredited member of the BHA (British Humanist Association) and a recognised funeral officiate representative for Coventry and Warwickshire offering families a personal and reflective service for the loss of their loved ones. Now a member of the AOIC Association of Independent Celebrants offering funeral and wedding ceremonies

Reflects' Proprietor, Alan Penny if also a member of ISTSS (International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies) EWTS (European Workshops on Traumatic Stress) and UKPTS (United Kingdom Psychological Society, through these memberships, strives to continue his professional development and knowledge, as well as providing an ethical, caring service to his counselling clients.

Alan also has achieved an Advanced Diploma in Humanistic & Existential Counselling and a Certificate in CBT & has also trained at Oxford Cognitive Therapy Centre and Oxford Trauma & Stress Centre respectively in TFCBT and Psychology Warwick University.

 


 

He is trained in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing):

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, or EMDR, is a powerful psychotherapy technique which has been very successful in helping people who suffer from trauma, anxiety, panic, disturbing memories, post traumatic stress and many other emotional problems and is evidenced based recognised under the NICE guidelines..

Until recently, these conditions were difficult and time-consuming to treat. EMDR is considered a breakthrough therapy because of its simplicity and the fact that it can bring quick and lasting relief for most types of emotional distress. EMDR is one of the most effective and rapid methods for healing PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) as shown by extensive scientific research studies.

The EMDR therapy uses bilateral stimulation, right/left eye movement, or tactile stimulation, which repeatedly activates the opposite sides of the brain, releasing emotional experiences that are "trapped" in the nervous system. This assists the neurophysiological system, the basis of the mind/body connection, to free itself of blockages and reconnect itself. As troubling images and feelings are processed by the brain via the eye-movement patterns of EMDR, resolution of the issues and a more peaceful state are achieved.



How does it work..?



The therapist works gently with the client and asks him/her to revisit the traumatic moment or incident, recalling feelings surrounding the experience, as well as any negative thoughts, feelings and memories. The therapist then holds her fingers about eighteen inches from the clients face and begins to move them back and forth like a windshield wiper.

The client tracks the movements as if watching ping pong. The more intensely the client focuses on the memory, the easier it becomes for the memory to come to life. As quick and vibrant images arise during the therapy session, they are processed by the eye movements, resulting in painful feelings being exchanged for more peaceful, loving and resolved feelings.

The EMDR method helps people overcome issues ranging from the loss of a loved one, relationship problems, phobias and trouble sleeping through to recovering from serious car accidents, or being the victim in a robbery, rape, violent crimes, or case of physical or sexual abuse.

Fees are negotiable and reduced fees are offered to those unemployed and on low incomes.
